kinda skimmed through the last 3/4ths of this, but got the general ideas
Very chock full of random stuff, but I do like the sense of enjoyment the author clearly has about communicating the subject matter
random notes:
- look into radio legacy of Herbert Morrison (who reported famously on the Hindenburg disaster)
- Hugo Eckener's role is tragic
> kind of similar to Oppenheimer, in that he was a well-intentioned guy who cared about his craft, but got involved in a lot of fairly ugly stuff (with Eckener, specifically his desire to maintain his idealistic dream of zeppelin space flight)
funny note:
- texted Isaac about reference the 1975 Hindenburg movie:
"the movie includes a scene where some damage happens to a stabilizing fin on the zeppelin. In a film with a somewhat weak plot, this scene stands out for its heightened sense of drama" lol
> apparently it also had "horrible animation effects" and "a man exploding and zooming to a smaller size across the screen, like the same time pong was invented on the computer probably" (Isaac quote)
★★★
Interesting book...not grabby enough for me to care about all of it...but the end sort of tragic bit is pretty striking
